The figures, published on August 20, reflect the total number of heat-related fatalities recorded across the country over the summer based on the institute's statistical modeling.

Elderly women aged 85 and older accounted for the highest number of deaths during the prolonged period of high temperatures. The institute releases heat mortality monitoring results on a weekly basis to track heat impact.
Official death certificates in Germany rarely cite weather conditions as the direct cause of death. Instead, medical authorities generally view severe heat as an aggravating factor that worsens existing chronic health conditions.
The Robert Koch Institute serves as Germany's federal public health agency and national disease control body, operating under the Federal Ministry of Health.
European heatwave impact
The casualty figures follow a wave of extreme heat that swept across the European region starting in late June. During the peak of the heatwave, 60 temperature records were broken in a single day.
All-time high temperatures were recorded across 19 European countries during the summer. The historic heat affected the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Montenegro, Serbia, Romania, Albania, Poland, Croatia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Denmark, France, Germany, Austria and Italy.
Beyond the direct impact on human health, the record temperatures in 2026 severely disrupted the European economy across five main operational areas.
Economic disruptions
Falling water levels on the Rhine forced commercial shipping vessels to reduce freight loads or suspend voyages altogether.
The Rhine is one of Western Europe's most vital inland waterways, connecting major industrial centers in Germany and neighboring countries to international shipping ports.
Industrial manufacturing output was also restricted as extreme heat forced several factories to reduce production because of heightened strain on railway lines and road transport infrastructure.
Agricultural yields and livestock farming suffered significant damage from the heatwave, while water reservoirs feeding hydroelectric power stations were depleted. Elevated river temperatures also hindered cooling operations at nuclear power plant reactors.
