Geely has unveiled a methanol-electric hybrid system for its Galaxy Starshine 6 EF sedan that allows the car to run on gasoline, methanol, or any mix of the two from a single fuel tank.
A dedicated sensor measures the methanol concentration in the tank and passes that data to the engine control unit, which adjusts fuel injection and ignition settings in real time. The system removes any need for the driver to track fuel ratios when filling up.
The powertrain also features direct fuel injection at 350 bar, a new ignition system, and revised engine calibrations. Geely said the combination addresses a longstanding weakness of methanol engines: cold-weather starting.
The company said bench testing of the new powertrain ran 3.6 times longer than testing for a conventional gasoline engine, and road trials across different climates and methanol fuel types covered around two million kilometres.
Geely has not announced a release date, full specifications, or pricing for the Galaxy Starshine 6 EF.
