Gaza City Holds Mass Funeral for 112 Killed by Israel

Crowds gathered in Gaza City for a mass funeral for 112 people, mostly women and children, killed in an Israeli strike on a residential block at the end of 2023, near the start of the war in Gaza.

The bodies were recovered from the rubble recently, after a two-week operation.

Footage showed the remains laid out in rows, each victim covered with a Palestinian flag and some with photographs of the dead, before relatives carried them away.

One mourner, Ali Abu Sariya, said that after managing to recover and bury them, they might find some partial relief, despite the pain of loss and everything they were still living through.

Who was killed

Forty-four children, 38 women and seven people with disabilities are among the dead, according to the report. Dozens of other bodies are believed to still not have been recovered from the site.

The victims were killed when a residential complex in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City was struck by Israel on November 22, 2023.

Israeli response and death toll

The BBC asked the Israeli military for information on why the block was targeted but has not yet received a response.

Since the war began, at least 73,377 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures the United Nations considers reliable.
