France Cracks Down on €550M Vehicle Registration Fraud

The French government is targeting so-called "ghost garages," a fraud scheme in which criminals seize control of legitimate garage owners' accounts, steal their identities, and generate hundreds of fake vehicle registration documents to register stolen cars.

The total value of the fraud reached 550 million euros between 2022 and 2024, according to the report.

Interior Ministry response

Questioned about the scheme, the Interior Ministry said it is now better able to detect the fraud. The ministry said it is also reviewing the authorizations granted to garages in order to prevent similar cases in the future.
