A fire broke out at St. Basil’s Cathedral on Red Square in Moscow, according to TASS, citing a source in the emergency services.

The blaze started on the first floor in the director’s office, where personal belongings and furniture caught fire. Emergency services said the fire covered an area of ten square metres and had been extinguished. No one was injured, and the cause of the fire has not been determined.

According to the Telegram channel Mash, 15 fire engines arrived at Red Square. TASS reported 10 crews. Firefighters entered the building, and white smoke was visible above the cathedral’s domes. After the fire was put out, part of the fire crews left Red Square.

A witness told the Telegram channel Ostorozhno Novosti that smoke continued for about half an hour, rising in small clouds. She said there was no visible open flame but a strong smell of burning could be felt in the air. She added that four or five fire vehicles remained on site after others departed.
