At least five people have died and 41 remain missing after a ferry caught fire off Madura Island in Indonesia, the country’s search and rescue agency announced.
The vessel, KM Mutiara Sentosa 2, was carrying 271 passengers and crew members when it caught fire in the Java Sea near Sumenep Regency. By Sunday afternoon local time, 225 people had been rescued, according to rescue services.
The ferry had departed from Surabaya and was bound for Makassar in southern Sulawesi. A search and rescue operation remains under way. Inaccurate passenger manifests have hampered rescue efforts, the agency said.
