The United States Federal Aviation Administration has recruited more than 2,000 video game players as air traffic controllers to resolve nationwide airport staffing shortages.
Successful candidates who complete the rigorous training program can earn annual salaries of $155,000, equivalent to more than 134,000 euros at current exchange rates.
Federal aviation officials turned to creative recruiting tactics to attract applicants for one of the most demanding jobs in transportation. The agency specifically targeted young gamers whose visual spatial perception, sustained concentration, rapid problem solving, and multitasking abilities match the core cognitive skills required in air traffic towers.
Air traffic controllers are responsible for guiding aircraft safely on airport runways and through controlled airspace. Operators monitor flight positions, coordinate departures and arrivals, and communicate continuous instructions to pilots to maintain safe separation between aircraft and prevent mid-air collisions.
Gaming Advertisements and Recruitment Results
To reach prospective applicants, the Federal Aviation Administration launched an advertising campaign built around video game culture. The campaign features promotional clips from major video games, including the battle royale title Fortnite, developed by Epic Games.
The advertisements feature the slogan informing young players that they have been preparing for this career through their time spent at the controls. The outreach effort specifically targets members of Generation Z, the demographic born between the late 1990s and early 2010s who grew up with interactive digital entertainment.
United States Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy highlighted the success of the recruitment drive in a post published August 9, 2026, on the social media platform X. Duffy stated that the agency had launched the new campaign in April to attract top talent faster and described the initial results as historic.
According to figures shared by Duffy, the agency has already met 94 percent of its overall hiring goal, marking the fastest time on record to reach that recruitment benchmark. Duffy added that the Department of Transportation is building the strongest and sharpest workforce in aviation history.
The campaign has already resulted in the hiring of more than 2,000 air traffic operators across the country. An additional 2,000 candidates are currently undergoing official evaluation as part of the hiring pipeline.
Candidate Requirements and Qualification Testing
Despite the gaming-focused outreach, qualifying for an air traffic control position involves a strict selection process. Applicants must be under 31 years of age at the time of registration, hold United States citizenship, and speak fluent English.
Candidates must also pass background checks confirming no criminal record, undergo medical evaluations including mandatory drug screening, and complete a comprehensive three-and-a-half-hour aptitude exam.
The Department of Transportation oversees federal transit systems, highway infrastructure, and civil aviation policy, managing specialized agencies like the Federal Aviation Administration to maintain national transportation safety standards.
Academy Training and On-the-Job Certification
Applicants who pass the initial screening are admitted to the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. Located at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in the Oklahoma state capital, the academy serves as the central training hub for federal air traffic controllers and aviation specialists.
After completing initial coursework at the academy, trainees begin between one and three years of practical, on-the-job training at operational air traffic facilities before earning full certification.
The training path remains highly challenging, with approximately one third of all admitted candidates dropping out before achieving certification. About two thirds of applicants successfully complete the process to secure permanent positions.
For successful graduates, the $155,000 salary rewards an operational environment where split-second decisions carry real-world consequences, providing gamers with a professional setting where their virtual skills apply to live airspace management without a restart button.
