Find out what Luis Fonsi does in bed in the morning, who reveals how he makes his decisions. Does he listen to his heart or reason?

He loves writing songs, being in the studio composing, recording and developing melodies. But without a doubt, the greatest pleasure of that process is listening months later to her fans singing her songs at the top of their lungs. Luis Fonsi, an artist who has fallen in love with the world with his lyrics, is also capable of making it dance without losing his essence.

Love is always present in his lyrics, whether in an urban pop or in his inevitable ballad. That richness of musical genres, which allow the Puerto Rican’s followers to dance energetically, remember an intense relationship or sing it to the person they love (or who broke their heart), is part of the experience that the interpreter of Sunflowers, Empty, Seamless and Beautiful (new singles) gives away to his followers in Law of gravity, the album that this Friday March 11 premieres on digital platforms.

With the privilege that technology provides, this newspaper spoke with Fonsi by video call. It could be thought that an artist with the worldwide success that he has conquered may have some air of a divo. On the contrary, the musician welcomes us in a space in his house with such warmth that at times we forget that we are connected through a screen and feel the nerves that we could experience when facing a multi-award-winning star.

Law of gravity It is the 11th album by the artist who began his career in 1995 and who plans to celebrate, as he tells us, with a party at home. In this album he compiles ballads, pop and tropical rhythms, a track list of 16 themes as diverse in genres as in collaborations. “Law of gravity It is an album that brings together many moments, different rhythms and fusions. I’ve always liked that quest. Try to do new things and mix different styles, always putting my personal stamp on it. That restlessness leads me to make an album where very romantic themes and very rhythmic themes coexist in the same world”, he assures.

This artistic fusion is also enriched by collaborations. Myke Towers, Rauw Alejandro, Cali y El Dandee, Farruko, Dalex ft. Juanka, Nicky Jam and Sebastian Yatra They are the guest artists on this album whose name symbolizes, as he says, the force of attraction that unites him with each song. “Each collaboration is a different adventure. I love that sharing. That union that is like mixing two different ingredients without knowing what the final result will be, ”he adds.

The new album, produced by the award-winning Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo, includes eight unreleased songs and eight hits, composed by Fonsi, Torres and Rengifo, along with other composers. “The thing I like most about working with Andrés and Mauricio is that we are always on the same page,” he says. “We listen to similar music, we think similar, we have the same sense of humor, so we just understand each other. I really enjoy that creation process with them because everything flows very naturally. In addition to being production geniuses, they are great songwriters.”

In one of his post In social networks, he affirmed that his best compositions are born in his bed and early in the morning. According to this scenario, what hits from his repertoire have been born in the intimacy of his bed?

Many, the one that perhaps most people know was Slowlythat is the best example because it was born when I got up and ran to the studio to record what I had in my head, because many times they are like melodies or passing phrases because the brain processes them and often forgets, so I always have to be recording everything so that I don’t forget and in that case I recorded it there and after that one takes that idea to the next step. Who told you that I wrote it like this, in bed, I do not give up, You understand me, they are songs that are born there, in that first moment of the day, when one is relaxed, when one is calm, when the rhythm of the madness of the day, of the telephone, of the calls, has not started. so that post that I put has a lot of truth.

Law of gravity it is an album of different genres and fusions, how is that production process in which the lyrics and melodies are created?

I try not to overthink it too much, today I have to write a ballad. I kind of try to let the moment take me, I really like to co-write and I like to get together with different composers and play with their style a little, that they take me to their world to be able to have a very varied album. And suddenly I work with a composer who is very good at making rhythmic songs and well, well, we are going to do something rhythmic to see what is born or many times, as we were talking now, that day an idea comes up in the morning and I have it very present, I have it very alive, like I really want to go out, and that’s what I develop, that’s what I work on that composition day.

There are no rules about how one should write and what exactly, when I’m closing the album I do an analysis of the songs I have, of the ones I like the most and there, yes, one enters a little bit into the balance of… well , I already have a lot of rhythmic songs or I have a lot of ballads, I need more rhythmic ones or, gosh, a part time would be good for the album so that it is round, so that nothing is missing.

In your process, what comes first, the lyrics, the melody or the choice of the person with whom the collaboration will be made?

Sometimes I meet with an artist and we say to each other: ‘Hey, we have to work together, brother (brother)’ and we are going to write together. Other times I make a song and say: Uff, this song sounds like such an artist, let me call him, see if he likes it, and the artist is born. Other times I’m with my guitar, I make a song and I say: No, no, no, I want to do this song alone, this is mine, this one doesn’t need featuringI think it’s better to do this this way, very simple, with guitar, with little production.

The truth is that I don’t know and that is what makes music a magical process, that there are no formulas, that nobody has them, whoever tells you they have them is lying to you. And it is a question that I ask my composition teachers, those who have spent many more years than me, I asked Juan Luis Guerra, for example, I asked Juan Gabriel, for example. Just like that, like a student asking his teacher: “Hey, teacher, how do you compose? How do you know what you want to say? What comes first, the lyrics or the melody?”, to compare, a little humbly , what I do and my process. And we all always end up saying the same thing, that there is no formula, it is a completely different process for each song, just when you think that nothing is going to come out, suddenly something important comes out or vice versa.

Paraphrasing the lyrics of his recent singles, as in Sweetwhat has been the most unforgettable night for you, before, during and after the pandemic?

You made it difficult for me, there are things I can’t say in this interview (laughs). Unforgettable night there have been several, I can tie it to something very much in my career. I don’t know, to be on stage. In recent years, for obvious reasons, I don’t really want to talk about the pandemic either, because I think we are all a little fried with the pandemic, obviously there have been few concerts, tours have been more limited; now everything is beginning, but those moments that one is on stage, now more than ever one celebrates them. When you say unforgettable nights I think of that, just as I think of celebrating Christmas with my family, just as I simply think of a night in which I am doing absolutely nothing, that I stay at home with my wife and children and I think this is life, this is success. It is difficult to answer this question.

You have referred to your children Rocco and Mika as your two best compositions, if they were musical genres, what musical genre would each be?

My daughter would be something romantic, it would be a genre with a lot of passion, it would be like a tango. Romantic and with a lot of passion, with a lot of attitude, but something beautiful and that’s how she is, she is very shy but very passionate, very sensitive and she is the love of my life.

My son would be a reggaeton, a super-mega-reggueton with a lot of partying, or a rock and roll, I don’t know, it would be something with a lot of rhythm, with a lot of flavor, because he’s the opposite pole, because he’s not shy, he lights you up with his smile, he has a lot of energy and is very hyperactive in that sense, it would be something higher.

In the subject our ballad ensures that what the heart dictates must be heeded, at what times do you make your decisions with your heart and/or with reason, or is it a mixture of both?

The heart always decides, without a doubt, at all times. Sometimes one has that internal fight, that the head tells you something but the heart tells you something else, but if I had to choose, the one who is here (he says while pointing to his chest) is always the one who decides.

The song Holidays invites us to go out and enjoy as a couple, when you take a break from work, where do you like to go to relax and unwind? How do you manage to go unnoticed while on vacation?

It doesn’t bother me that they recognize me, let’s start there. I don’t feel like I have to get away from people to be calm at all. In fact, maybe my favorite place is my real home, it’s Puerto Rico. Going to a beach in Puerto Rico, going to the countryside, the smell of the saltpeter beach in Puerto Rico is different, it is very different from that of the beach in Miami, the sand is different, a beer tastes different on the beach there than here (laughs). You understand me? It’s my house, where I grew up, it’s my DNA, those will always be my favorite vacations. We are beach people, here in my house we are beach people and we like to go from beach to beach, we like to be on the boat, we like to escape and go from beach to beach and we like to escape to the Bahamas and look for beautiful remote places. But I also tell you that I love the snow, I love skiing, I love being in the city, visiting New York, visiting cities that inspire me a lot, Madrid, I don’t know. But yes my land, if I had to answer, my land people.

When do you resume your concert tours in Latin America? Will you make a space on your tour to Ecuador?

Oh, I hope, I’m really looking forward to it, we’re putting together the tour. We start at the end of May, to be exact, on the 27th and 28th we start in Puerto Rico and then, all summer, basically we will be on tour until October. I would say that next week or two more weeks they will be announcing the dates that are confirmed and obviously I really want to return to Ecuador, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Where will you be when the album is fully released on digital platforms?

On Friday I’m going to be here at my house, doing some interviews and sharing with my audience, and at night I’m going to celebrate, I’m going to have a little party, we’re going to celebrate music. (AND)
