Italy investigates whether a 700 million euro superyacht, anchored in Tuscany, belongs to Vladimir Putin

The Italian Police investigates the ownership of a superyacht docked in Tuscany (center) with a value of 700 million euros to clarify if it belongs to a Russian businessman or even to the president himself, Vladimir Putin.

The Guardia di Finanza (border police and tax crimes) is investigating the ownership of this and other ships that are in the country to find out if they are Russian, sources close to the investigations told EFE today.

It does so within the framework of the economic sanctions that the European Union (EU) is imposing on Russian oligarchs for the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops.

Really verifying who is the owner of this and other vessels that are under investigation is not an easy task, because on many occasions they are in the hands of figureheads, the sources added.

The ship in question is called Scheherazade, is one of the largest and most expensive in the world and has been moored since September in Marina di Carrara, a small town on the coast of Tuscany.

Its enormous size (it is 140 meters long) attracts the attention of the neighbors, who not knowing its owner they call it “Putin’s yacht”as published this Wednesday by some local media.

The boat has two helipads, a gym and also a swimming pool with a retractable cover which can easily be transformed into a dance floor.

Scheherazade is the title of a symphony by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakovwhich reinforces suspicions that whoever is behind this luxurious ship can be a Russian millionaire.

New sanctions on more oligarchs

The countries of the European Union (EU) approved this Wednesday the imposition of new sanctions in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including blacklisting more Russian oligarchs, politicians, and their relatives, and pulling the plug on three Belarusian banks of the SWIFT international communication system.

The EU had already expelled seven Russian banks from the interbank system, among which are not Sberbank, the largest entity in the country, or Gazprombank, because they process a large part of the energy operations with the bloc.

In addition, it froze the assets of the Russian central bank in community territory and sanctioned Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, among other senior officialsas well as the country’s military leadership. (I)
