Residents of the Cube parish, in the center of the province of Esmeraldas, demand the improvement of a neighborhood road and three bridges in the sector.
Alejandro Bone, peasant leader, said that since 2014 the road project was prepared by the Ministry of Labor and Public Works. The study was delivered to the Prefecture of Esmeraldas for its execution, whose initial cost would be $5.6 million.
Some 50 communities of the 73 that the Cube parish has require this neighborhood road.
The residents have been protesting since 10:00 on Wednesday the 9th. They closed a section of the E20 Esmeraldas – Quinindé highway, at the El Roto – Cube entrance.
“Agricultural products we have to move with mules or on foot,” explained Raúl Cando, another of the leaders.
While Katalina Valencia, who drives a cargo van, recalled that some vehicles suffered mishaps on the hill known as La Muerte. Also, the destruction of a carriage bridge due to the rising of the Cube River, in 2018.
With materials donated by EP Petroecuador, two metal bridges were built.
The foreigner known as Tony El Suizo, an expert in this type of infrastructure, built the aforementioned bridges.
One of them, in the Caple estuary, is damaged by vehicular traffic.
From the Prefecture of Esmeraldas it was reported that the 10-kilometer road section was presented to the Secretariat of Reconstruction and depends on government financing.
While the Gadpe has invested some $4 million in reconstruction and improvement of local roads, such as La Herrera 1 and 2.
Representatives of these communities awaited the arrival of the prefect Roberta Zambrano or Gadpe officials. (I)
