Mitchell Ryan died Friday morning in Los Angeles – the information was confirmed by the actor’s agent.

Ryan played the ex-swindler Burke Devlin on the cult TV show “Dark Shadows” before quitting the show in 1967. His lover in the production was played by Kathryn Leigh Scott, who said goodbye to her friend on Facebook. “My sweet beloved friend Mitch died this morning,” she wrote and added:

He was a wonderful gift that life has brought me. Now I remember nice moments and his beautiful soul. I have a broken heart.

Throughout his impressive career, the character actor performed, among others alongside Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. His filmography includes such titles as “The Avenger”, “Magnum Force”, “The Bunny’s Death”, “Lethal Weapon”, “Hot Shots 2”, “Judge Dredd” and “Betrayal”. Many viewers with a smile watched his supporting role in the sitcom “Dharma and Greg”, in which he played the wealthy and blasé father of the title character.

Ryan has appeared in many TV shows, including the cult shows: “All My Children”, “The Golden Girl” and “She Wrote: Murder”. In 2021, he published a diary entitled “The Fall of the Sparrow”, in which he detailed his struggle with alcoholism. “I am lucky that, having been a drunk for 30 years, I managed to live the life of an envied actor,” he wrote in the introduction to the book. “I’ve lived a good chunk of my life this way. Being sober for the next 30 years gave me the belief that I came out of it all as a good and useful person.”

Ryan’s stepdaughter Denise Freed confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the actor died of congestive heart failure at his Los Angeles home. In addition to his stepdaughter, Ryan left behind a wife Barbara and five grandchildren.
