Anna Politkowska was an independent Russian journalist, human rights defender and expert on Chechnya. She was born in 1958 in New York to a family of Soviet diplomats. She studied journalism in Moscow. In the 1990s, as a reporter for “Novaj Gaziety”, she was mainly involved in the Second War in Chechnya.

Man-institution

Her articles were exceptionally bold. Politkowska wrote about the offenses of both sides of the conflict – incl. about torture, murder and abduction. In addition, she helped Chechen families, as well as the mothers of missing Russian soldiers.

– Thanks to her articles, she has become a man-institution. She reached places and people where no other journalist has gone. People from the Caucasus themselves turned to her for help, making Politkowska a channel for transmitting the most interesting information, said journalist Marcin Wojciechowski on the Polish Radio.

Politkovskaya did not hide her critical attitude towards Vladimir Putin and the pro-Russian leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. So many attempts were made to intimidate her. Already in 2001, she received the first threats. Despite this, she did not back down from her activities.

Murder on Putin’s birthday

On October 7, 2006, information about Politkovskaya’s death circulated in the media around the world. The journalist was heading to her apartment in the center of Moscow. The killer entered the elevator with her and fired four shots.

The journalist was murdered on the 54th birthday of Vladimir Putin. So it became the basis for a lot of speculation. It was suggested, among other things, that the services wanted to give the politician a gift. Officially, however, a direct link between Putin’s birthday and the murder of the journalist has never been established.

“Principal – it’s politics”

Politkovskaya’s death caused a huge stir in the world. Clarifications on this matter were demanded from Putin by, among others, George Bush junior. – I don’t know who killed her. But it’s clear that many people hiding from the Russian justice system have long been looking for someone to sacrifice to spark a wave of antipathy towards Russia around the world, Putin explained to the US President.

The leads in the investigation led to Chechnya. Eight years passed before those accused of the murder were convicted by final judgments. However, many commentators emphasized at the time that the convicts had no personal motive to kill Politkovskaya.

The investigation has dragged on so far because the principal is a policy. And big politics, apparently. And if so, I am personally sure: the client is known. He just got an indulgence. The same will happen later with the murder of Boris Nemtsov: the executors will be released, the public will be calmed down, and the client will not be sought. Why look for it when everyone “who needs it” already knows? “Nowaja Gazeta” is not an investigation or a court, we have only one thing to do: make sure that everyone knows the name of the client

– Sergey Sokolov wrote on the 15th anniversary of the journalist’s death, deputy editor-in-chief of the daily Novaya Gazeta.
