In 1968, Dziady, directed by Dejmek, was taken off the poster. These events initiated a wave of rebellion

In 1968, the communist authorities canceled the play “Dziadów” staged at the National Theater. A month after the premiere, Kazimierz Dejmek, who directed the show, was urgently summoned to the Central Committee. There he heard that his staging was “anti-Soviet” and “anti-Russian”, and then he was removed from the Polish United Workers’ Party and dismissed from the position of National Director.

When Dziady disappeared from the poster, protests began, which sparked numerous confrontations with the communist authorities in 1968. The rally was brutally pacified by the ZOMO, ORMo and the so-called workers’ activist and became the beginning of the March events.

The grandson of Kazimierz Dejmek sent a letter to Krzysztof Głuchowski. “Today – nearly 33 years after regaining independence – the government, whose leaders proudly recall their fight for freedom of speech, are questioning Dziady again (nomen omen), and admitting that they have not even seen the performance. this indicates that the director will meet a similar ‘punishment’ that befell my grandfather “- wrote Paweł Dejmek.
