In their natural habitat, palm trees are found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. Due to their original appearance, we are more and more willing to cultivate them at home. Contrary to appearances, the care of home palm trees is not complicated if we are.
Are you dreaming of lush home palm trees? Remember these rules
In order to provide our palm tree with the right conditions for growth, we need a few basic elements:
- Set-up – as to be expected due to the natural conditions in which palm trees are found, these plants need a lot of light, but diffused. The leaves must not be exposed to direct sunlight, as this can lead to burns,
- Watering – here the principle works: the lower the temperature, the less irrigation. The plant should not be watered more often than necessary, but abundantly. Therefore, in winter, watering is kept to a minimum. Depending on the soil moisture, this may be once a week or less frequently. In summer, however, it will be approximately every 3 days,
- Sprinkling – this operation should be performed as often as possible, and even every day, especially in summer. If we are people who do not necessarily remember such things, it is a good idea to invest in an air humidifier, which we will set at 50-60%. In addition, we can make a quick shower once every three weeks,
- The substrate and its fertilization – we can choose a specialized substrate for palm trees or choose a universal soil and add some sand and clay to it. In addition, there must be a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to protect the roots from standing water that could lead to rotting. In summer, it is also worth fertilizing the plant with special agents every 2-3 weeks,
- Transplanting – it is recommended to replant the palm tree immediately after purchasing it. Later, we perform such a treatment on young plants once a year in spring. We replant older palm trees every three years. In the case of large specimens, if we cannot replant them, it is enough to replace the top layer,
Find out about the most frequently chosen house palms
- Chamedora refined – one of the easiest to care for, although unfortunately it grows very slowly,
- Low Chamerops – perfect for people looking for small palm trees, as it grows up to 1 m in height,
- Canary Date Palm – a variety for those looking for larger specimens. It grows up to 3 m in height,
- Washington threadlike – grows quite quickly, so in its case the effects of care will be noticeable relatively quickly.
