Ericka and Jay Johsnon are veterinarians specializing in the treatment of reptiles, which are, by the way, what have joined their paths. The couple met while conducting research on desert turtles. For this reason, they decided to hire their 20-year-old tortoise, Tom, to wear wedding rings during their wedding ceremony.

“Jay and I are exotic animal vets, and turtles have always been at the center of what we shared.” We are both great admirers and we met while studying wild desert turtles – Ericka explained in an interview with metro.co.uk.
In the photos from the ceremony, we can see a huge 20-year-old turtle walking to the altar with flowers attached to its shell, on which rings rested. “It was probably the slowest walk down the aisle in history,” Eric joked amused. As she explained, it lasted as long as three minutes, and the turtle’s path to the altar was marked by a path made of strawberries, which are his favorite delicacy.
– He is very social and always hungry. He mainly eats hay and dry food, because he is a species adapted to living in the desert and he shouldn’t eat a lot of fruit, but because he loves strawberries very much, we knew that it was a surefire method that would definitely work – he explains.
“We were only concerned that he would mistake the painted toenails at the feet of our guests for fruit and deviate from the road to bite them, but luckily nothing happened,” she confessed.
– I was very proud of him. I think it did a great job and we are really pleased with how it all turned out, ‘added Jay.
As the couple admitted, Tom the turtle did indeed become the biggest star of the ceremony, stealing the young couple’s attention. It also aroused a sensation among Internet users browsing the photos from the ceremony. However, not everyone liked the idea of using the animal in this way. Many of them argued that a couple who care for the welfare of animals on a daily basis should not involve a reptile in this role and promote similar practices.
