The Ministry will not award the Juliusz Słowacki in Krakow, the status of the “national stage”, and this is associated with the loss of up to three million zlotys in the budget for 2022. The director found out about it two days before the end of the previous year. The information was confirmed on Twitter by Minister Piotr Gliński.
– The withdrawal of the Ministry of Culture from the patronage over the Słowacki Theater means one thing for us: a reduction in finances by PLN 3 million and quite large spaces in the coming years for the renovation and modernization of the theater, from the foundations to the roof. We have to tighten the belt. We are already limiting the repertoire for next year, we are resigning from several major premieres on the main stage. It will be a financially difficult year for us – the director of the theater, Krzysztof Głuchowski, “Gazeta Wyborcza”.
Guild of Polish Directors and Theater Directors: Limiting creative freedom and access to culture
“The decision of the Minister in such difficult times for culture, made, as it should be assumed, influenced by the opinion expressed by the Krakow curator of education about the play Dziady directed by Maja Kleczewska, strikes one of the most meritorious scenes for Polish culture, the theater of of great national and patriotic significance, the site of the premiere of, among others, “Wesele” and “Dziady” in the edition of Stanisław Wyspiański “- write the members of the guild. “This decision is a threat to the lives of artists and artists cooperating with the theater and its regular employees, it threatens the realization of the artistic program, and most of all it is aimed at the audience of the Juliusz Słowacki Theater,” emphasize the directors. They point out that the historic theater building requires financial outlays, and the money from the ministry was also to be used for its maintenance. The strongest words are at the end:
Additionally, it is disturbing that the decision confirms the mechanism of intimidating institutions, their directors and the artists working in them by limiting subsidies, and is an attempt to put pressure on repertoire plans, and thus limit creative freedom and access to culture for the broad masses of its recipients. .
There was a lot of attention about the theater in Krakow in November last year in connection with the statement related to the ruling camp of the Małopolska education curator Barbara Nowak. She issued a statement in which she stated that “the performance contains inadequate and harmful interpretations for children and students who do not fit in with the goals of the education system specified in Art. 1 points 1-3 of the Educational Law”. In the further part of the speech, he emphasizes that the school board “strongly advises against organizing school visits for children and young people to this spectacle”.
Also Minister Gliński – although he did not see the performance – spoke about it then. – Any activities that are controversial in art and exceed the limits of this acceptable controversy are disturbing – he said.
The result was immediate, directed by Maja Kleczewska.
