The echoes of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris are still ongoing. The legendary Polish sports commentator Przemysław Babiarz has been suspended by the authorities of Telewizja Polska due to words he uttered on air.
Przemysław Babiarz suspended after comment on song “Imagine”
When the unofficial anthem of the games, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, rang out during the broadcast of the sports festival, Babiarz announced to TVP viewers: “A world without heaven, nations and religions. This is a vision of peace that is supposed to encompass everyone. This is the vision of communism, unfortunately.” – Mutual understanding, tolerance, reconciliation – these are not only the basic Olympic ideas, they are also the foundation of the standards that the new Polish Television follows. There is no consent to break them – the station commented on the incident.
Karolina Korwin-Piotrowska, a well-known journalist and film critic, also spoke out about Babiarz’s tactlessness. – We are service providers. No one is interested in our opinion. On the other hand, it shows that ‘Imagine’ is still alive, that great art will defend itself, and stupid comments from commentators will not. Inba exploded, the right wing was delighted. For me, it was also a display of ignorance and an inflated ego – she commented on the situation in an interview with Jastrząb Post.
Korwin-Piotrowska on Babiarz’s slip-up. “A show of ignorance and an inflated ego”
The journalist admitted that she watched the opening ceremony of the games on another station. She noted that Polish media make many more mistakes. “Polish commentators always tend to talk too much,” she noted. “It was a comedy of errors. Eurosport didn’t make the same mistakes as he did, because they had, I suspect, the entire brief beforehand. Besides, we have something like a mobile phone where we can check the name of a painter, the name of Delacroix,” she added.
