Blueberries are usually grown in the ground. They grow best in sunny and wind-sheltered locations. They like medium-permeable, humus-rich and very acidic soil with a pH of 3.8-4.8. They have very high water requirements. They need frequent watering, preferably with rainwater, which is characterized by an acidic pH.
Growing Blueberries in Pots. Which Variety to Choose?
Blueberries can be easily planted in a pot on a terrace or balcony. Providing the right conditions is essential if we want them to grow large, sweet and have a beautiful color. Choose a low variety, with slow growth, resistant to low temperatures. The following will work very well:
- Baby Blue (30-50 cm high),
- Top Hat (50 cm high),
- Northblue (60-90 cm high),
- Aina (70-80 cm high).
As with garden blueberries, the soil should be acidic. A mixture of acidic peat, pine bark and sand will work best. You can safely place the pot in the sun, because it likes light.

Blueberry in a pot on the balcony. How to care for it?
The pot for growing blueberries does not have to be deep, but wide. The best containers are 50 cm deep and 50-80 cm in diameter. They will be large enough to accommodate the expanding roots. At the bottom, make a drainage hole and drainage, e.g. from expanded clay or gravel. This will prevent excessive water accumulation. Once you have planted the plant, water it thoroughly and mulch it with coniferous sawdust or composted bark. Prune the branches from mid-February to the end of March. Remove diseased, damaged and old (over five years old) shoots. This will help the blueberry grow healthily.
