In 1993, she graduated from the Kraków Theatre School and made his screen debut with a cameo in the cult film “Schindler’s List”. His career developed dynamically, earning him not only the title of one of the best in his field, but also the status of a movie lover. His breakthrough was one of the main roles in “Quo Vadis” by Henryk Sienkiewicz, directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, because although he was pigeonholed in his homeland, he gained a chance to develop his career abroad.
In Polish cinema he was pigeonholed. Deląg spread his wings only outside the country’s borders.
His first foreign title was the French film “Les Femmes d’abord”, after the premiere of which he received an invitation to eight different castings and was eventually cast in every role he wanted. Then he also tried his hand at Russia, and gained popularity in the East by playing a German in the Belarusian production “June 1941”. In total, he appeared in over 60 foreign titles, arousing admiration among both viewers and critics. Although he had the chance to spread his wings in Hollywood, he never decided to emigrate overseas. As he admitted in an interview for WP, in the late 90s he even received a lucrative offer, but he turned it down in favor of , which meant that the chance passed forever. “I said I had to go back to the country and finish this film. It took a year, and then it somehow never came up again,” he confessed. Despite this, he did not feel defeated, and he met American stars on European film sets. The memory of one of them still evokes mixed feelings in him.
Deląg played alongside a Hollywood actress. During their first meeting, she insulted him
Fans probably remember that in 2009 he appeared in the film adaptation of Maria Kruger’s bestselling novel “Karolcia” directed by Jowita Gondek. It was in this Polish-American co-production that he appeared alongside Faye Dunaway, who took the place of , playing the role of Philomena the Witch. He was excited at the thought of meeting the Oscar winner and as soon as he was invited to her dressing room, he prepared to make the best impression on her. However, she did not care about the same at all. When he showed up at the appointed time, the star unexpectedly and for no reason flew into a rage. – “Who are you?! How dare you come in here?! No one invited you here, get out!” – he recalled the words she shouted.
To make matters worse, it turned out that the first scene they were supposed to play together was filmed alone, because the actress didn’t bother to show up on set. Then the situation repeated itself, and he had to assist during her takes. “I looked at her with deep disgust, because for me such behavior was the height of arrogance,” he said. It was only when a few days later she accidentally overheard him talking to his agent in French that she changed her attitude towards him. “And that’s when it all started! It turned out that she is a huge Francophile and loves the language, literature, Paris and wine,” he said, adding that after a short but inspiring conversation, they returned to the set “like best friends.” It is worth mentioning that Deląg’s experience is not an isolated case, because Dunaway does not have the best reputation among his co-workers. He even found out about it, because during the production of “Chinatown,” the actress slapped him in front of everyone when he tried to fix her costume, specifically a hair that was in the frame, ruining the take.
