The musician Ruper Ordorika (Oñati, 1956) will receive this year the Abadia Prize awarded by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa for the “abundant and inexhaustible” contribution made over four decades “in favour of creation and culture in the Basque language”. The award ceremony will take place on 12 September at the Abadia Palace in Hendaye.

The director of Linguistic Equality of the regional entity, Garbiñe Mendizabal, has highlighted that “through her music and her voice, drawing from diverse sources, she has opened Basque song to new frontiers, thus creating her own universe, always from the Basque language and in Basque.”

He explained that “he took up the baton of the new Basque song and took it to new territories, in those first records published in the 80s” and that, since then, “in the wide range between song and rock, he has given the Basque language countless new songs and melodies.”

Mendizabal concluded by saying that the “significant and innovative proposals he has launched, the passion he has shown for caring for and enriching the creative process and the language in all his works” place Ruper Ordorika among the “main references” for Basque culture in recent decades.

New stage

The director of Linguistic Equality has also reported that the Abadia Prize will begin a new stage with the aim of “giving importance and a new spirit” to the award.

Next year marks the 25th edition of the award and, going forward, they want to “give it even more prestige” and give it “greater institutional relevance.”
