The film “Twisters” is taking cinemas by storm. After its opening weekend, we know that Lee Isaac Chung’s latest work is an undisputed summer hit. The production is considered a disaster movie, but during its almost two-hour runtime, a second plot, the one straight from a romantic comedy, clearly stands out on the screen.
Spielberg insisted on this ending for Twisters. And it was the best decision
The creators of “Twisters” apart from the breathtaking fight with untamed tornadoes, serve us a great screwball comedy. Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) are like fire and water. At first glance, they are different in every way, the film confuses the clues in subsequent scenes and convinces the viewer that these two will never get along or understand each other. However, as is the case in such stories, it soon turns out that the characters have a lot in common.
Romantic plots in disaster films can be banal, unrealistic and poorly executed (“Twister” from 1996 is the best example). Sometimes it’s hard to believe that in extreme life-threatening situations, real people would find time for grand confessions or excessive tenderness. In “Twisters” shallow scenes were avoided. The feelings that are born between Kate and Tyler germinate in the background of more important events for the film and it was a bull’s eye. Care, interest, admiration are expressed here very subtly: in small gestures, glances, somewhere between the lines.
The following paragraphs will reveal the ending of the film. Be warned, there are spoilers.
The situation does not change even in the last scene of the production. Although the tornadoes do not threaten the heroes, the fight for life is over and they can finally focus on themselves, the couple is again disturbed by something. Some viewers probably felt disappointed when the couple smiling at each other with buttery eyes at the airport did not kiss in the end. However, the executive producer of the film, Steven Spielberg, had other plans. He decided that the tenderness would not be shown on the screen.
Edgar-Jones admitted in an interview that she agrees with the decision of the iconic director. “I think that thanks to this the film is not too banal,” the actress emphasized. She noted that thanks to this small understatement we know that the story of Kate and Tyler continues and does not end with the credits.
Glen Powell also shares this opinion. “This movie is not about these two finding love,” the actor points out. He emphasizes that the kiss did not fit the real purpose and production and could have caused viewers to lose sight of the real message of the film in just a moment. And it’s hard not to sign under these opinions. Believe it or not, but “the fact that they didn’t kiss at the end was the best decision in this movie” – these were my first words about “Twisters” after leaving the cinema.
