The TV chart was a hit in the 90s. John Paul II fought for the podium with Britney Spears

Before MTV was established, the program “30 ton – list, list of hits” was popular among Polish music fans. It was there that interviews with stars, information about concerts and, above all, the results of the charts of the most hit songs appeared. In one of the lists, even a prayer song by John Paul II fought for the podium with world-class artists.

There are programs that, although they have long since disappeared from the air, still arouse great emotions and nostalgia. This group undoubtedly includes the cult , a music and information format broadcast in the years 1995-2006 on TVP2. Its creator and originator was Walter Chełstowski, modeled somewhat on the British “Top of The Pops”, and the host and narrator was Dariusz Odija. How did it all start?

Who hosted “30 tons – list list of hits”? This is how the iconic TVP music program was created

The idea of creating a television chart appeared in 1994. Chełstowski had one goal in mind – to inform about the chart results of the biggest hits, concerts, single premieres and present short interviews with the most popular music stars. However, the road to its implementation was long and bumpy. The first person involved in the project was Anna Hernik, then a second-year student of theatre studies, who was entrusted with the daunting task of collecting data from all radio stations in the country and statistics from album sales in music stores.

The scripts she prepared were read on air for 11 years by Dariusz Odija, who went down in history as the voice of “30 tons”. When he started working with the creator of the program, he didn’t really know what he was signing up for, because the vision was being shaped on an ongoing basis. – I didn’t know what it was all about yet. The first attempt and I asked Walter: “But what should I do, how should it look?” and it was lovely, I remember it to this day, he replied: “Darek, I don’t know. We’ll figure it out” – he recalled. The attempts were successful and since then Odija has been reading the previously prepared script, but he didn’t appear on screen, so viewers didn’t know what the famous host looked like for years. On February 7, 1995, the first episode of the format debuted on air and in the blink of an eye, it delighted the audience. Each subsequent one attracted crowds of viewers, and high viewership results made it a permanent element of the station’s schedule until April 8, 2006.
