Of course, many people would say that we have nothing to complain about. We are both 30 years old, Krystian earns 4 thousand and I earn 3.5 thousand net. There are people who live much more modestly. Unfortunately, our quality of life has deteriorated significantly. To the point that we literally count every zloty. We do not allow ourselves any “luxuries”, we save everything we can. We are not married yet, but we plan to formalize our relationship. We started building a house, for which we took out a loan. I probably do not have to tell you how much our loan installment has increased over the last 2 years. On top of that, we still live in a rented apartment.
Poles can’t afford vacations? “I’m fed up with this kind of life”
I am increasingly fed up with this kind of life. I often think back to my college days and the beginning of my career. Back then, I lived quite comfortably, prices were also much lower, I enjoyed life and had great plans and dreams ahead of me. Today, with all this stress and the idea of ”from one day to the next”, I feel as if someone had simply slapped me in the face. Someone will immediately say that no one told me not to take out a loan to build a house. Of course, I can live my whole life without having anything of my own. But that is a mediocre perspective.
That’s what I’m getting at. Any extra earnings, bonuses, etc., go towards the loan and construction. We used to love traveling. We would organize a few of these “city breaks” a year, to foreign capitals. And since it’s summer and the holiday season, I started to revisit those memories. I told Krystian that we were still just saving, paying off, and we should also have something from life. I wanted us to get away for at least a week. I was thinking about some cheap last minute vacation, for example to Egypt, or even somewhere in Poland.

They work, earn money, but can’t afford a vacation. “Life has verified my plans”
Life, however, quickly verified my plans. A week-long holiday abroad for one person costs several thousand złoty. At the moment, we simply cannot afford it. And when it comes to the Baltic Sea – unfortunately, prices are not much lower… Everything went uphill like that. I looked at different options, even a camping site, but I came to the conclusion that a week in a tent is not my dream vacation.
Prices have defeated us. We can’t spend that much money. We have to build a house and take out a mortgage. It hurt me so much. The situation in our country is such that my boyfriend and I earn 8 thousand złoty together and we literally can’t afford a vacation. And I’m not talking about some fancy trip to Bali for two weeks! A week by the sea in Poland would be enough. The worst thing is that there is an ongoing auction among our friends: who went where this year, who visited what, who has their eye on which car or which tiles for the kitchen they want. I am simply ashamed to admit to them that I don’t have money. My Krystian comforts me and tells me to grit my teeth, that “just a little bit more”, that “the construction will be over, then only the installment will remain, then we will recover”. I know that it is hard for him too. I only wonder how much longer it will last…
