Katerina Karaglanova was a well-known figure on social media. You could say that her career was just starting out, but she managed to gather 90 thousand followers on Instagram. From January to July 2019, the blogger visited Italy, Spain, France, the Canary Islands, Austria, Portugal, the Dominican Republic, the United Arab Emirates and Greece. On Monday, July 22, she published a post from the island of Corfu. This was the last entry that appeared on her Instagram.
Literally a few days later, the young traveler was already dead. After returning from Corfu, she was supposed to spend a few days in Moscow and then travel to the Netherlands. The girl was supposed to fly there on July 28 to celebrate her 25th birthday. According to unofficial reports, the 24-year-old planned to spend this trip with a 52-year-old man she was dating at the time.
She stopped posting and didn’t answer her phone.
Katerina Karaglanova returned to Moscow and disappeared without a trace. On July 27, her distraught parents reported her disappearance to the police. Her relatives noticed that the girl had not been active on social media at all in recent days, and had not responded to phone calls or messages. Karaglanova’s parents managed to contact the owner of the apartment that the 24-year-old was renting. When they entered, they were met with a scene from a horror movie.
A suitcase was found in the apartment, and inside it was the mutilated body of a 24-year-old woman. Her leg was sticking out of the suitcase. From the very beginning, the police assumed that the perpetrator could be someone with whom the girl had a closer relationship or someone she simply knew. Thanks to the recordings from the surveillance cameras, they managed to find Maksim Gareyev. The cameras captured the 33-year-old leaving the murdered woman’s apartment at night.
His former friends remembered him as a rude and brutal guy. However, about a year and a half ago, he began to change radically
– one could read in the Russian media.
He stabbed her 19 times. “I hit her first, second, third time…”
The man was detained on July 30. During the investigation, it was established that on July 26 he was in Karaglanova’s apartment. The media reported that the couple met for sexual purposes, and the man allegedly paid the blogger for the meetings. Gareyev testified that Katerina was supposed to mock him. “She said that I could not satisfy her. That I was ugly and even surgery did not help me (…). I could not stand it. I found a knife in the kitchen. I hit her the first, second, third time,” he testified.
The killer stabbed the woman 19 times in total. After the brutal murder, he put her body in a suitcase. He claimed that he was unable to take the body out of the apartment. In March 2020, the killer was sentenced to 9 years in prison with strict regime. The court also ordered him to pay the victim’s family compensation in the amount of 2.5 million rubles.
