They once decorated the cars of many Poles. Today we rarely see them. Why did they disappear?

These characteristic stickers once dominated Polish roads. Although we saw them mainly on older car models, a decade ago they appeared in great numbers. What happened to them?

Stickers on cars used to be very popular. Now we see much less of them, but a few years ago no one was surprised by an inscription about a child or, for example, a dog “on board” stuck on the rear window or trunk. These types of stickers are informative, but car owners also use decorative or humorous ones. Some people choose, for example, stickers with animals or various other shapes, symbolizing e.g. a given sports discipline or the passion of a given driver. Their meaning is mostly obvious.

One of the most characteristic symbols stuck on the back of the car was a fish. What does this symbol mean? This is nothing more than a religious declaration. This shape is intended to indicate that a given vehicle is driven by a person professing Catholicism.

Fish sticker on the car. Which means?

The Christian fish has a specific shape. Drawn this way, it is a symbol of Jesus Christ for Catholics, and to read the exact meaning of the symbol, you need to use ancient Greek. In ancient Greek, “ichtys” means fish. This word is also the first letters of the following phrase: “Iesus Christos, Theou Yios, Soter”, i.e. “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior”.

However, the question may arise: why a fish and not a cross, which is also a symbol of Christianity? For Catholics, the cross is a symbol of memory of the death and crucifixion of Christ. The sign of the fish is a symbol of Jesus Christ, as well as baptism, i.e. the beginning of life, vitality and food of Christians. Sticking this sign on car bodies had its origins in Germany during Protestant times.

Why are we seeing less and less fish stickers?

But let’s get back to the key question: Why did the fish disappear from cars? Along with the fish, we increasingly rarely see any stickers on windows or trunks, even those of a mocking nature. The fashion for wrapping cars in Poland has simply passed away. It reached its peak mainly at the turn of the 1990s and 2000s, but now this type of decorations are simply rare.

These types of religious symbols, such as the fish, have a very specific meaning and inform about specific values. Therefore, not everyone will want to drive a car wrapped like this. Fortunately, such stickers can be easily removed.

How to remove a sticker from the bodywork?

Service advises to simply remove the sticker from the body in a non-invasive way. All you need to do is lightly heat the place where the sticker is located, e.g. with a hair dryer. During the next step, be very careful not to scratch the paint – you need to gently pry the sticker off with a razor blade. After prying it off, we tear it off the body.

However, it is worth adding – which may be another reason to resign from stickers on the body – that if the sticker has been in a given place for a long time, after removing it, the color of the paint in that place may differ from that on the rest of the car. This is because it has not had time to fade under the influence of UV rays. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
