Should shopping Sundays come back? Many Poles have had enough. “What bothered anyone?”

Should shopping Sundays come back? Many Poles have had enough. “What bothered anyone?”

Even though the ban on Sunday trading has been in force for several years, the change still arouses considerable emotions. Following the discussions on this topic, we can get the impression that the solution has as many supporters as opponents. Several people shared their thoughts with us.

Agnieszka does not hide the fact that she really likes the changes that were introduced a few years ago. He works in a store, so he’s happy to have Sundays off. – I remember that I really didn’t like those Sunday shifts, I was happy when I didn’t have them – she recalls. – I hope that nothing will change in this matter. In Germany, such a ban has been in place for years and it doesn’t bother anyone there, he adds.

“They said Sunday was for going to church”

Julia is also a supporter of the ban. She is happy that her mother, who has been working in retail for several dozen years, can finally rest on Sundays. She sees that it does her good. However, she is irritated by how the new regulations were justified. – I remember politicians saying back then that Sunday was for going to church, not shopping. Only something went wrong, because the shops are closed and there are fewer and fewer believers… – says our interlocutor.

There are people who would be happy to work on weekends

However, not everyone likes the ban. – What bothered anyone about shopping Sundays? I have no idea. To me this is pure absurdity. There are so many people who had the opportunity that day not only to do some leisurely shopping, but also to work. Because despite what many people shout, there are people (for example full-time students) who would like to work on weekends. Suddenly, one of the two days was taken away from them, says Alicja. And as he adds:

In my opinion, being able to trade every Sunday is not a bad idea at all. This can be addressed in an appropriate way, for example by offering employees more per day. I think there will be no shortage of people willing to work.

The ban is unfair to trade workers themselves

Marta, who is a journalist, reminds that there are still many industries in which people still have to work on Sundays. – In each subsequent editorial office I worked on weekends and holidays. This is how many industries function. And I am not very convinced by the arguments that store employees must have Sundays off, while employees of cinemas, theaters, restaurants, bars, many industries, journalists, employees of customer service centers, security, etc., cannot. Not to mention doctors, policemen, soldiers and firefighters, says Marta.

Moreover, in her opinion, the ban is also unfair to trade workers themselves. – Some of them do not have to work on Sunday, and some do. It seems to me that the matter would be resolved by including in the Labor Code that work on Sundays and holidays is, for example, double paid – he sums up.
