“A new production. Aiden Gillen, whom you loved from ‘Game of Thrones’, has arrived,” wrote Linda, publishing a photo of the actors together. He poses with the actor who plays Petyr Baelish, Littlefinger from the film adaptation of “A Song of Ice and Fire.” Although he did not reveal the details of the project, we already know what film it is about.
According to the website On the screen, it is about “Duel” (working title is “Gorky’s Sanatorium”), directed by Łukasz Palkowski. This is a historical production that will tell the story of the events of September 17, 1939, when the USSR attacked Poland. The filmmakers intend to show, among others: the Red Army captured the Polish unit near Tarnopol and established a camp in Kozielsk.
The main roles will be played by Jakub Giersza³ as Karol Grabowski and Aidan Gillen, who will play the Soviet agent Vasily Zarubin. Responsible for the script include: Robert Gliński – we wrote about the project in 2019. Then he received 30,000. gold prize in a competition announced in 2016 by Minister Piotr Gliński (the similarity of names is not accidental). It was a competition for a script for a feature production “in the field of Polish history”, and several ideas were awarded.
Prizes of PLN 30,000. The following scripts won PLN each in the competition: Marek Ławrynowicz about the occupation fate of Bruno Schulz, Tomasz Klimala about the “Sokół” Gymnastic Society and Robert Gliński about the Katyn massacre. The latter, according to the Filmpolski website, was supposed to appear in cinemas in September 2020. However, we had to wait much longer – if it was still the same scenario. Polish Film classified “Gorky’s Sanatorium” as an unrealized project. The script of “Duel” is a joint work of Robert Gliński, Jamila Ankiewicz and Agatha Dominik.
What is “Duel” supposed to be about?
The action of the film will take place in the prisoner of war camp in Kozielsk – an Orthodox monastery converted by the Soviets into a Recreation Center. Maxim Gorky. Poles are held there to “convince them” of the communist system and the Soviet Union. For this purpose, they had to watch 40 feature films for half a year and also talk to Vasily Zarubin – the operational representative in the camp. Second lieutenant also goes to Kozielsk. Karol Grabowski, a talented pianist, finalist of the Chopin Competition, spoiled with artistic successes.
There is no release date for the film yet. Since filming is ongoing, it’s unlikely to be released this year.
