Ignacy Machowski was lucky with roles, but he was not very successful in love. The twice-divorced actor was slowly approaching 70 when a young medical student crossed his path. Machowski met Zofia Dramińska, then 20, in a pump room in Szczawnica. Luckily, a woman who was more than 40 years younger than the actor invited him for coffee.

They both quickly realized that they were connected by something more than just warm friendship. They wanted to build a common future. However, they were aware that such a huge age difference could raise a lot of controversy among the public, so they decided to keep their relationship a secret for some time. The actor’s new partner was several years younger than his son from his first marriage.
The lovers got married after five years of relationship. In 1987, their daughter Maria was born. Four years later, when Ignacy Machowski turned 70, Zofia Darmińska gave birth to her son, Jerzy. As the youngest of three siblings, he did not enjoy his father’s presence for long. However, in an interview with “Retro” magazine, he stated that he never complained about Machowski’s lack of commitment: “He was already retired and had a lot of time for me. I remember my earliest years, before my father’s illness immobilized me, as an idyll.”
The considerable age difference between Machowski and his youngest son often aroused surprise among those around him. “He was mistaken for my grandfather, but he didn’t feel offended by it, he just used the opportunity to show off his vitality,” explained Jerzy Machowski in “Retro”. Knowing that he would most likely not live to see his eldest son grow up, the actor began to spend every free moment with the children: he read them fairy tales, took them to school, and prepared meals.
Ignacy Machowski died on January 11, 2001. Previously, the actor was diagnosed with cancer, but old age meant that he no longer had the strength to fight the disease. After his death, the wife of the deceased actor started treating overload diseases in people associated with the artistic community. Before his death, Machowski managed to infect his children with a passion for art, as a result of which his daughter Maria became a violinist and his son Jerzy a director.
