Wojciech Pokora did not plan an acting career at all. He took his first steps in adult life as an employee at a passenger car factory in Warsaw. However, fate took his life on a completely different course when a theater club was organized in the factory. Young Wojciech, encouraged by the presence of beautiful women from the administration, joined the group. It soon turned out that he had a natural talent for comedy.
Although Pokora appeared on the theater stage, it was his role in the film “Wanted, Wanted” that brought him the greatest popularity. When Stanisław Bareja offered him the role of Marysia, Pokora initially refused. He was planning a vacation with his wife in Bulgaria and didn’t want to cancel it. However, Bareja was adamant and convinced the actor that the film could be shot in a month. Ultimately, however, it was his wife Hanna who persuaded him to take on the role and lent him her wig and hat. Bareja kept his promise and the filming was finished within a month.
Success and its costs
The film was a huge success, and the character of Marysia became iconic. However, the popularity of the role brought many difficulties for Wojciech Pokora. The actor had to change his phone number three times due to numerous calls from people who blurred the line between the role and reality. In the street, children called after him “Marysia”, and the intercom in his apartment was constantly ringing, because passers-by, returning from night parties, felt obliged to call and ask about “Marysia”.
Career continuation
Pokora, becoming one of the most recognizable comedy actors in Poland. He appeared in many of Bareja’s films, such as “There is no rose without fire” or “What will you do to me if you catch me”. His talent for comedic roles made viewers love him for his authenticity and unique humor. Interestingly, Pokora didn’t think of himself as a particularly funny person. In his private life, he said he was a serious person and strongly separates his roles from how he lives every day. Years later, in one of the interviews, he said that, even despite unpleasant situations.
Private life and family support
Wojciech Pokora was lucky in his private life. His marriage to Hanna, whom he met at college, was full of love. His wife supported him in his professional decisions and helped in difficult moments. Their love lasted for over 60 years, until the actor’s last days.
