Caring for lavender can be extremely satisfying, especially when the plant rewards you with lush flowering and a beautiful scent. If we plant it near the house or terrace, we can count on one more additional benefit. Its scent effectively repels mosquitoes, so if you like barbecuing and spending evenings outdoors, this will be great news for you.
What doesn’t lavender like? The plant does not have high requirements
For lavender to develop well, we must provide it with appropriate conditions for growth. The most important thing is to choose the place where it will be planted. This one does not do well in the shade and needs a fully sunny position. We should avoid clay soil, but if it is the only one in our garden, no worries. Before planting, just dig up the soil well and mix it with gravel and manure.
Lavender does not like to be overwatered, so water it no more than once every week and a half, avoiding soaking the flowers. Mulching will save you from pulling out weeds, so it’s a good idea to sprinkle small stones or pine bark under it. Unlike many garden plants, lavender does not react well to too frequent fertilization. Sprinkling it with compost once a year in spring is enough.

How to make lavender bloom nicely? Check if it has not been attacked by pests
The most important activity that affects the flowering of the plant is pruning. This treatment will cause the lavender to branch out nicely and produce beautiful flowers. It is best to do this twice a year, in spring and autumn. We shorten the shoots by one third of their length, using a small pruner. Sometimes the process is inhibited by pests and diseases that attack lavender. The plant develops poorly when attacked by gray mold. We can recognize it by silver-gray spots and gray coating on the leaves and stems. To get rid of it, make a decoction of onion skins. Boil 200 g of shells in 1.5 liters of water and keep on fire for about 30 minutes. After this time, strain the liquid, cool it and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray sick lavender several times a day until the symptoms disappear completely. This usually takes about a week. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
