From left to right, in total they are 34 parties that are presented in Spain to the European elections in 2024, between classic formations and coalitions adapted to the European context. But not all of them, not even remotely, will reach the European Parliament. According to surveys, only a few will be represented in the Brussels chamber. Citizens, for example, it seems that it will disappear and will lose the seven seats it held until now and that they could be among those who will win the Popular Party (PP), whom practically all the polls place as election winner.

Of the seats distributed by Spain This Sunday, the majority will be distributed between the two key parties of the two-party system, PP and PSOE, But are not the only ones. The truth is that just like the participation in the European varies considerably with respect to participation in processes that Spaniards see as closer, such as municipal or regional elections, as does the direction of the vote. Yeah, We Spaniards do not vote the same for European elections as for general elections., and we take other factors into account. Although most of the parties presented are the same.

Sometimes, however, some join forces—as also occurs in other electoral processes—to form specific coalitions, as occurs with ERC, BNG, EH Bildu and Ara Més, who will present hand in hand in 2024 under the nomenclature of Now Republics, which already has three seats in the European Parliament (although in 2019 it was without Ara Més). And what do they propose for Europe? The relevant points of each of the matches are reflected in their programmatic commitmentswhich voters trust to decide who they will end up voting for.

The programs of the parties that are in the European Parliament

Of the 2019 european elections, a total of XX parties obtained representation in the European Parliament. All of them repeat and also appear in 2024, although they do so with specific programs for these elections. Among them is the PSOE, which was the party with the most votes five years ago, or the PP, which is the favorite in the polls, the two formations that will send the most MEPs to Brussels.

The socialist program, under the motto ‘More Europe, + PSOE’ It has just over 100 pages. The third vice president of the Government and minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, arrives at this 9J as the head of the list and with a program in which the socialists remember how Europe has been “the most successful political project in history” and ” the only one capable of integrating the plurality and diversity of the EU”. The PSOE presents itself as the best option to continue advancing and “clearly commit to More Europe”, an expression that has become its motto in 2024.

For its part, the PP, with Dolors Montserrat at its head, began by proposing a brief manifesto focused on four axes, each one focused on one of the great challenges of the Eurozone. Of course, a few days before the European elections he presented the complete program, twenty pages with 80 measures that remain at 78 if we discount the two that are repeated word for word.

While Ciudadanos was the third most voted party in 2019, it is expected that in 2024 the Third position in Spain is occupied by Santiago Abascal’s far-right party, Vox, with Jorge Buxadé at the helm. Under a motto in line with its declaration of intentions — ‘They are going to hear us’ —, Vox presents a program for European women focused on the fight against what it considers illegal immigration or against the 2030 Agenda.

And although Ciudadanos also appears, the truth is that whoever voted for the orange party in 2019 seems to will do it with a different formation this time. The polls give him around 1% of the ballots, insufficient to obtain even one MEP, so it is expected that his seven MEPs will return to Spain without a return ticket to Brussels. Even so, it also has its specific program for the Europeans, hoping to retain some of its seats.

Those expected to keep their three seats are Now Republics, while Sumar could take over some of those that Podemos obtained in 2019, dividing the vote of the left—given that the two formations present themselves separately. Junts is also expected to be able to retain some of its deputies, while the CEUS coalition also has a chance of remaining in the European Parliament.
