he was born in the United States like his parents. However, his roots on his grandmother’s side go back to Poland, which – as it turns out – was so important to the director that he applied for recognition of his Polish citizenship. According to information obtained by “Wprost”, Aronofsky has submitted appropriate documents confirming his relationship with his Polish grandmother and can now call himself a “Polish citizen”.
Darren Aronofsky received Polish citizenship
According to “Wprost”, the procedure for recognizing the director’s citizenship was completed a month ago. Formalities contributed to the positive decision – the director’s grandmother was Polish:
It was the desire of Aronofsky’s parents that he would one day become a Pole – says “Wprost” attorney Marcin MamiĆski, who is in charge of the matter of recognizing the artist’s citizenship.
Aronofsky had to prove that he was related to his grandmother and that she was a Polish citizen after 1920. He also had to prove that Poland was present in the lives of his parents and himself. The director’s grandmother emigrated with part of her family from Poland to the United States before World War II, and his parents were born in the USA. Only he and his sister decided to act on their origins. The director also has Russian roots – as he said in an interview for “” in 2011 on the occasion of the premiere of “Black Swan”, he feels “a deep connection with Russia because of his grandparents, many family traditions come from this region”. Since little is known about Aronofsky’s ancestors, and the director rarely touches on this topic, we hope that he has not confused Poland and Russia and simply has grandparents from our Slavic region – both Poland and Russia.
Darren Aronofsky is known for his heavy, psychological dramas. He likes to use abstract themes and discusses mental illnesses and addictions. He has one Oscar nomination for directing “Black Swan”, but although he himself has not won an Oscar yet, the actors in his films did – Brendan Fraser for “The Whale” and Natalie Portman for the already mentioned “Black Swan”. Among Aronofsky’s most famous productions we can also find the famous “Requiem for a Dream” and “Pi”.
