Today, through its artistic director, Calixto Bieito, the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao revealed the programming for the 2024/2025 season. The novelties will take the stage starting in mid-September, once the performances of the musical end. The Phantom of the Operawhich can be seen between August 14 and September 15.

The zarzuela ‘Mari-Eli’, by Jesús Guridi, directed by Calixto Bieito; the Basque and Spanish adaptation of ‘The Glass Menagerie’, by Tennessee Williams; and Beethoven’s ‘Missa Solemnis’ in concert will be the theater’s three main productions.

The adaptation of the play by Tennessee Williams ‘The Crystal Zoo’ – ‘Kristalezko zooa’ (in Basque), under the stage direction of the author and director Natalia Menéndez, will premiere first in Basque, from March 21 to 23, 2025 , and later in Spanish, from April 3 to 6. The cast will be the same for both versions, made up of Mikel Losada, Ione Irazabal, Miren Gaztañaga and Arnatz Puertas.

The other “large own production” will be a “critical review”, as defined by the theater’s artistic director, of the zarzuela ‘Mari-Eli’, by Jesús Guridi, which will be directed by Calixto Bieito and will feature the Society Bilbao Choir and the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa (BOS). The show will premiere on April 30 and May 1. In addition, Beethoven’s ‘Missa Solemnis’ will close the season in concert format, on June 21 under the direction of Erik Nielsen and the voices of Vanessa Goikoetxea, Nerea Berraondo, Michael Porter and David Menéndez together with the BOS, the Bilbao Choral Society and the Orfeón Pamplonés.

In addition, the Arriaga will also program other Basque works such as Who shot us? (Pavilion 6, February 13), The cork dilemma (Tartean Teatroa, October 18, translation of Kortxoaren dilemmaren), the play based on the novel Miñan by Ibrahima Balde and Amets Arzallus (Artedrama, October 24), Alleged (October 30) and The heart and other demolition materials (November 20).

In January 2025, the company La Dramática Erante will present Lorerik ez, hiletarik ez, adiorik ez/No flowers, no funeral, no ashes, no tantan in Basque (January 23) and Spanish (24 and 25). María Goiricelaya has been in charge of the dramaturgy and direction of this work, which will be performed by Ane Pikaza, Aitor Borobia, Loli Astoreka, Patxo Telleria, Egoitz Sanchez and Idoia Merodio.

On April 9 in Basque and on the 10th in Spanish, you can see a new show written and directed by Mireia Gabilondo: Badakizu plastikozko loreak ez dira inoiz bizi, ezta? and You know that plastic flowers have never lived, right?

In addition, once again this year, top names such as Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Malena Alterio, David Lorente, Alberto San Juan, José Sacristán, Blanca Portillo, Guillermo Toledo, Alba Flores, Nathalie Poza, Emma Suárez, Juan will take the stage at the Arriaga. Diego Botto, Nuria Espert, Vicky Peña, Victoria Abril…

Between September 26 and October 6, Carmina Buranaby Carl Orff, will return to Bilbao in concert format by La Fura dels Baus, and the Arriaga will host concerts by Ruper Ordorika (October 13), Doctor Deseo (January 10 and 11) and the pianist Joserra Senperena and the mezzo-soprano Maite Arurabarrena (May 21).

Tickets for all shows in the 2024/2025 season will go on sale on June 24.
