In 1987, Phil Hartman married Brynn Omdahl, a model and aspiring actress whom he had met on a blind date the previous year. It wasn’t the first time for the actor. He got married twice before, but the relationships ended after a few years. The relationship with Omdahl was also not a good one. The couple had two children, but Brynn was not happy with the way her life was turning out. She dreamed of a great career and envied her husband’s success.
When their son was born in 1988, the family received a letter of congratulations from Hartman’s second wife. In response, Omdahl allegedly sent a four-page letter in which she threatened her husband’s ex that if she contacted Phil again, he would “gouge out her eyes.” The problems continued for years and worsened when the model became addicted to alcohol and drugs. Rehabs did not help, and the addiction made every attempt at career development unsuccessful.
On May 27, 1998, after another argument, Phil threatened her that if she ever used drugs or alcohol again, he would take the children away and demand a divorce. After the argument, everyone went to bed. At 3 a.m., Brynn entered the bedroom and shot Hartman three times. Then she went to a friend who didn’t believe the whole story. So they both returned home. Upon seeing the actor’s body, the man called the police, and Omdahl barricaded herself in the bathroom, where she committed suicide.
