Joaquín Gorrotxategi He was born in Eibar in 1953, and is an emeritus professor in the area of ​​Indo-European Linguistics at the UPV-EHU. The linguist won last week the Euskadi Research Award 2023

His high school Latin teacher sparked his interest in languages, and later, when he studied in Salamanca with Koldo Mitxelena, he discovered the Philology. Afterwards he continued his studies in Toulouse, among others.

Today he is a professor and full professor at the Department of Classical Studies at the UPV-EHU, after years and years dedicated to research, teaching and dissemination.

“There is a lot of talk about climate change and the extinction of species but there are also languages ​​that are going to disappear, some this decade because there are few speakers left”. With him we talked, of course, about Basque, among others, and the recent discovery of the Irulegi’s handand much more.
