More and more often, in Polish cinema, we can see a return to beloved titles from years ago. Suffice it to mention the subsequent parts of “Kogla Mogla”, the new version of “The Quack Man” or the equally hit refreshed “Mr. Kleks’ Academy”. It is therefore not surprising that for his directorial debut he was tempted to create a production with iconic characters from the trilogy.
Where to watch “On Your Own. The Beginning”? The prequel to the cult series was a hit in cinemas
We are, of course, talking about the Pawlak and Kargul families. The series was initiated by the comedy “Sami swoi” from 1967, and its success led to the creation of two equally successful sequels in the following years: “Nie ma mocch” and “Kochaj albo leci”. Less than five decades after the premiere of the last one, the idea of creating a prequel emerged. Although initially opinions were divided, production finally began and the titled film hit the big screens on February 16, 2024.
Despite initial fears, the production broke all possible records, achieving surprising results. In the opening weekend alone, it attracted over 220,000 to cinemas. viewers, and after a week there were over half a million viewers. High turnout, ultimately over 800,000 were sold. tickets, however, did not translate into positive opinions, because the opinions of both viewers and critics were extremely different. Fans of the original complained primarily about the differences in the way the stories of the feuding families were told, while others drew attention to the high level of acting. What is the movie “Sami swoi. The Beginning” about? These are the actors who played Pawlak and Kargul
Andrzej Mularczyk is responsible for the script for “Sami swoi. Popocztek”, he created it based on his book “Everyone lives as he knows”, published in 1983. The film takes place several years before the Pawlaks and Karguls left the Eastern Borderlands. Both families live next to each other in a village in Podolia, creating a truly explosive neighborhood. They constantly argue and fight various battles, and their complex fates and life perturbations take place against the background of a great and important story that takes the viewer on a sentimental journey.
The characters of Kazimierz Pawlak and Władysław Kargul were played by Karol Dziuba, who replaced those known from the original and Wacław Kowalski. The cast also included such great names as Anna Dymna, Adam Ferency, Mirosław Baka, Zbigniew Zamachowski, Janusz Chabior, Agnieszka Suchora, Wojciech Malajkat, as well as stars of the young generation, including: Weronika Humaj and Paulina Gałązka.
