Since “Mr. Kleks’ Academy” was released on Netflix, the film has remained the leader of the most frequently watched productions available on the website among Polish viewers. However, right behind Maciej Kawulski’s film on the list was “The Spanish Courier” directed by Daniel Calparsoro.
Poles started watching “The Spanish Courier” en masse
For two weeks, Poles have been massively watching the 2024 crime thriller starring Aron Piper and Maria Pedraza. The film takes place in 2002, when Spain joins the euro zone. The main character of the production is Ivan, a butler working in a luxurious golf club, who soon changes his life.
A young man becomes a courier for an international money laundering organization. “It’s the story of a man who had nothing and dared to reach for everything. Until suddenly his plan fell apart,” we read in the production description. The story from “The Spanish Courier” is inspired by real events that took place at the beginning of the 21st century on the Costa del Sol.
“Thick and heavy like expired ice cream”
However, Polish viewers’ interest in the Spanish thriller has nothing to do with its ratings. Critics were not impressed with the idea implemented in the production. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored only 33 percent. on the freshness scale. Roger Moore from Movie Nation accuses the film of shallow plots and lack of originality. Pablo Vázquez from Fotogramas criticizes the director’s complete lack of sense of humor and regrets that the production lacked a hint of irony. “Thick and heavy like expired ice cream. It is a victim of itself and of what it tries to condemn,” notes Javier Assessment from El Pais.
