Trueba has won the Label Europa Cinemas awardthe most important award given at the Filmmakers’ Fortnight at the Cannes Festival, for his film ‘Volverás’, a comedy about the end of love, full of self-references, starring Itsaso Arana and Vito Sanz.
“Jonas Trueba’s well-crafted and nuanced film has an unusual premise: tells the story of a couple who adopts a novel ritual. Before their separation, they choose to celebrate their 15 years of relationship with a party,” states the jury’s ruling, made public this Thursday through a statement.
“Humorous and intelligently written, the film’s circular structure manifests generosity of spirit in its inspiring look at human relationships. “It’s a nice beacon of positivity and we think it will appeal to audiences across Europe.”, he adds. This award means that the film, with a script by Trueba, Arana and Sanz, will receive support from the European Cinema Network through “additional promotion and incentives to expand the film’s exhibition in theaters” on the continent.
In the Filmmakers’ Fortnight – a parallel section of the Cannes Festival that especially rewards auteur looks -, the contest does not award its own prizesso it is not a competition per se, but several of its partners and sponsors do deliver recognition, such as in this case the European Cinema Network.
The movie talks about the story of a film directorAle (Arana) and an actor, Alex (Sanz), who decide to break up by mutual agreement after more than a decade together. But since everything is fine between them, they say, they decide to mark the occasion with a big party, like a wedding but in reverse, which leaves their friends and family completely bewildered. With this film, Trueba wins the same award that the also Spanish Elena Martín Gimeno received last year for her film ‘Creatura’.
