Research conducted over recent years clearly shows that the number of sex scenes in mainstream cinema productions has decreased significantly, however, those that do appear are more graphic than in the past. Stephen Follows, a film data analyst, noted in his study that sexual content has declined by almost 40 percent since the early 2000s. This trend may be surprising, given that the number of content distributors with a more liberal approach to censorship has never been greater, especially in the era of the rise of streaming platforms.
An increase in the number of videos without any sexual content
The study, conducted by film data analyst Stephen Follows, tracked the occurrence of sex and nudity in live-action films. Each scene was rated on a scale from “none” to “highly” graphic. The results showed that sexual content in cinema decreased by almost 40 percent, and with this, the number of films without any sexual content has increased from 20 percent a year to about 50 percent.
Violence, drugs and profanity without any major changes
The study also analyzed the amount of drugs, violence and profanity in the films. Profanity and drugs in cinema have decreased slightly since around 2014, but are still near their previous highs. Violence declined somewhat over the same period, but has returned to its widespread frequency in recent years.
There are fewer scenes, but they often show more than ever before
While the overall number of sex scenes in movies is declining, those that do show such shots are often more explicit than ever. New productions such as “Obsession” or “” feature scenes that not long ago would have been considered too bold or controversial.such as explanations of sexual intercourse or frontal nudity.
Changes in Generation Z’s sexual behavior and impact on the film industry
Another study (UCLA) from last year also found that Generation Z is having less sex than previous generations. Experts blame social media communication, distractions, access to online pornography and the COVID-19 pandemic. The same study also indicated that Generation Z wants to see fewer sex scenes on screens.
