Eurovision 2024. Israel booed during rehearsals. Protests in Malmo

This year’s Eurovision is overshadowed by political decisions from which the organizers are trying to distance themselves. Israel was allowed to take part in the competition, but the tests have already shown that it will be difficult to control the crowd gathered in the concert hall in Malmo.

Since the beginning of Israel’s invasion of Palestine, at least 35,000 Palestinians have died. The open war is a revenge for the terrorist attack carried out by Hamas in early October last year. The terrorists then killed 1,139 Israeli civilians and kidnapped others. For half a year now, Israel has been pacifying the Gaza Strip in response, attacking, in addition to military targets, hospitals, refugee camps and residential districts. It is also preparing for a major attack on Rafah, one of the last cities where Palestinian civilians can take refuge. When an attack occurs, experts estimate that up to a million people may die.

However, the war did not prevent Israel from accepting this year’s candidacy. The country is represented by Eden Golan, and the organizers are now trying to figure out how to prevent her performance from turning into more than just a political manifesto. Another side has just entered the game, i.e. the spectators and fans gathered in the concert hall in Malmo. And it’s still not over.

They take place with the participation of the audience, who during the performance by Eden Golan from Israel loudly announced what she thinks about the situation that this country has led to in Palestine. The singer was booed and booed, and there were also chants of “Free Palestine”.

Unofficially, it is already known that the Swedish broadcaster will try to drown out the sounds coming from the audience using recordings of people celebrating.

Eurovision 2024. Protests in Malmo

It can also be hot in Malmo itself on Thursday evening. According to reports, demonstrations against the war in Palestine and Israel’s actions are expected. It is supposed to be up to 20,000 people (for comparison, PiS on January 11 was estimated at 35,000 people). According to reports, the city has strengthened protection in the event of provocation during demonstrations, as well as to ensure the safety of the protest participants themselves. In turn, he reports that the Jewish diaspora in Malmo is also concerned.

I feel a certain tension, I can’t say I’m not concerned. The synagogue may become a target of protesters because of Israel’s performance at Eurovision, when emotions will really run high. This is not unthinkable, says Felix Krausz Sjogren, a guide to the Malmo synagogue, to Reuters.

The Israeli Security Council advises its citizens not to come to Malmo, suggesting that they may become the target of attacks by terrorists who would take advantage of the confusion resulting from the protests.
