French production Emmanuelle, directed by Audrey Diwan, will open the Official Section of the 72nd edition of the San Sebastián Festival in competition. The feature film will be screened in its world premiere on September 20 and will feature the presence of its director and its protagonists, Noémie Merlant and Naomi Watts, as announced this Tuesday by the San Sebastian festival.
Diwan, winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with L’événement (The Event, 2021), undertakes a new version of the legendary novel signed by Emmanuella Arsan. Emmanuelle follows the steps of a woman who is searching for a lost pleasure and who, on a business trip to Hong Kong, has numerous encounters, including one with Kei, a man who constantly eludes her.
Audrey Diwan made her feature film debut with Mais vous êtes fous / Losing It (2019), and his second film was The event, adaptation of the book by Annie Ernaux. With it he won the Golden Lion in Venice, and in 2021 Diwan was part of the jury of the Official Section of the San Sebastian Festival.
