We are only hours away from the start of Eurovision 2024, and this year’s competition, in addition to the excitement typical of this event, also raises many concerns, especially among the organizers themselves. All because of the conflict in which Palestine and Israel have been involved since October last year. The representative of the second country is scheduled to perform in Malmo on May 9, i.e. in the second round of the semi-finals.
Controversy around Eurovision 2024
Swedish services are afraid of street demonstrations, especially from Palestinian migrants living in the city hosting the competition. Therefore, the state authorities decided to introduce additional security measures immediately before and during the Eurovision Song Contest. Local officers, as well as police officers from Denmark and Norway, will maintain order in Malmo. Some of them are said to be armed with long weapons. “We are prepared for various scenarios,” assured Per Engstroem from the Swedish police.
The organizers are also prepared for potential cyber attacks from hackers wanting to disrupt this international event. The services also advised the Israeli representative not to leave the hotel room and to refrain from participating in events organized before the start of Eurovision.
In connection with the armed conflict between Plastyna and Israel, participants from nine countries taking part in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest expressed their opposition to various forms of hatred. “It is important for us to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and convey our heartfelt wish for peace, an immediate and lasting ceasefire and the safe return of all hostages. We are united against all forms of hatred, including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia,” the statement read.
