Bermeo celebrates this Saturday the centenary of the birth of Nestor Basterretxeaone of the most prominent and influential Basque artists of the 20th century, with the inauguration of the exhibition ‘Nestor Basterretxea 100 years’organized by members of the Barrueta Art Associationin which works never seen before are shown.
Gorka Basterretxeaone of the five children of the sculptor and painter, who was present, recalled that his father felt “deeply from Bermeo and the relationship he has had with his people has always been very close.”
In his hometown, as he stressed, he had “many friends” and visited his town a lot. “In Bermeo you can see that they loved him a lot and this is a very nice way to show it”he assured.

Néstor Basterretxea, born in Bermeo on May 6, 1924, He went into exile in France at the outbreak of the Civil War.. In his adolescence he discovered his artistic vocation and began to draw. After a boat exodus which lasted more than a year, his family settled in Buenos Aires in 1942.
He completed technical studies at the Huer Institute and took painting classes with Emilio Pettorutti. He worked in advertising, obtaining his first painting awards. He married María Isabel Irurtzun and, taking advantage of the marriage trip, he returned to Spain in 1952 and In 1958 he returned to live in the Basque Country. He died in Hondarribia on July 12, 2014.
In this centenary of Néstor Barrenetxea, ‘favorite son’ of the Biscayan town, It is intended to remember all his extensive work. Various cultural institutions and entities have come together and organized a complete program of activities for this year.
Precisely, his hometown is where he most plays there are works by the artist, such as Euskal Kosmogonia, the ghosts of grandmother Hilargi, Hilarriak, Olatua, the monument to Benito Barrueta, the Battle of Matxitxako and Lurdeia.
Commemoration day
The Bermeo City Council has chosen this Saturday to commemorate the centenary of Basterretxea’s birth, and this morning members of the Barrueta Art Society made drawings in homage to Néstor Basterretxea in the Franciscan cloister, among the Hilarriak works of art.
At 11:00 a.m. the exhibition ‘Nestor Basterretxea 100 urte’ was inaugurated, in which you can see works of art given by Néstor himself to some of the Bermeans who have been his friends and which the public has never seen.
The exhibition can be visited from May 4 to 12 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In addition, the little book made by Barrueta Arte Elkartea with the works of Basterretxea has been presented.

At 11:30 a.m., the artist’s friends held a talk in the Sala Néstor Basterretxea, where videos were projected, one of them with an interview with the artist.
At 1:00 p.m., the celebration moved to the Franciscan cloister, where the tribute was held around the Stela de Difuntos series. Alkartasuna Dantza Taldea held an honorary aurresku and the mayor of Bermeo, Nadia Nemeh Shomaly, addressed a few words to those present.
In addition, a floral offering was made with a song that Néstor Basterretxea liked. The Bermeo City Council program will continue in the fall. During the months of October and November, there will be guided tours organized by the Tourist Office.
