TVN Style, a station addressed to women, owned by the American company TVN Warner Bros. Discovery has already been waiting 10 months for the extension of the license by the National Broadcasting Council. In February, the regulator refrained from making a decision because the channel’s monitoring showed that the schedule included too little documentary and journalistic programs.
TVN Style is still waiting for a license. Prof. Kowalski from the National Broadcasting Council comments
“Departures from the license provisions, however, were not greater than about 4 percent. Moreover, some programs are difficult to classify into a given genre. Now the regulator will carry out monitoring again to check whether the broadcaster complies with the license,” we read on the industry portal, which contacted this matter also with the member of the National Broadcasting Council, prof. Tadeusz Kowalski.
Monitoring should not in any way suspend the decision to extend the license. If the broadcaster receives a license and does not comply with the provisions contained therein, proceedings to withdraw it may be initiated at any time. Monitoring should not be the only criterion deciding whether to extend or not extend a license. However, the Council decided so, orders further monitoring, waits for further results and thus postpones the decision – says Dr. Hab. Tadeusz Kowalski, prof. University of Warsaw
Polsat stations were also waiting for their license to be extended. However, not as long as TVN channels
Although the TVN channel broadcaster in particular has problems in many areas with the National Broadcasting Council, in December 2023, after monitoring the Polsat Cafe and Disco Polo Music stations, the regulator also postponed the decision on extending the license for these channels. At that time, the National Council had reservations about the programs “Małolaty” and “Wedding from Hell”.
As we read: “no violation of Polish law and too early broadcast of these formats were found, therefore the licenses were extended”, but despite this, the items disappeared from Polsat’s schedules. Prof. Later in the conversation, Kowalski admitted that he hoped the same would happen with TVN Style. A member of the National Broadcasting Council expects a decision at the next meeting.
– On Wednesday, the broadcaster received another reminder in connection with the reconcession process that has been going on for 10 months. The meeting of the National Broadcasting Council will be held only on May 8. Most likely, an application for a re-license for TVN Style will be on his agenda. I hope that a decision will be made then, admitted Prof. Kowalski. According to information from the industry portal, the letter was written by a law firm that had already advised the broadcaster on the extension of the license for TVN24 in the past.
