More and more consecrated virgins and fewer and fewer priests in Poland. “Ideal form of life”

Ladies who have never married or lived openly in a state “opposite of chastity” are allowed for consecration. Interestingly, in our country more and more people decide to choose this path. At the same time, the number of priestly vocations is decreasing. The latest data from the Catholic Information Agency remind us of this.

The Catholic Information Agency reported that the number of men entering diocesan and religious seminaries is decreasing in our country. This academic year it dropped to 280 people (in the previous year there were 329, and two years ago – 356). In addition, there was also a decline in the number of people who registered for women’s congregations.

Interestingly, however, forms of consecrated life are becoming more and more popular. According to the Catholic Information Agency, there are currently 427 consecrated virgins in our country. Since last year, their number has increased by 31. In addition, we also have 419 consecrated widows and only one widower.

Who is a consecrated virgin? Who can become one?

Receiving consecration means committing to maintaining virginity throughout your life. This rite is performed by the Ordinary of a given diocese. It can be accepted by laywomen and nuns. Importantly, women who have never married or lived openly in a state “contrary to chastity” are allowed for consecration. The first virgin consecrated in Poland was Zofia Prochownik from Krakow. She took her vows on October 12, 1991, at the age of 40. As she revealed, she had been preparing for this internally for a very long time – since the time when she was studying theology.

A few years ago, we published material on this topic on our website. Among others, Mrs. Karolina, who is a consecrated virgin, commented on it. According to her, it is an ideal form of life for today’s troubled and difficult times. And, as she revealed, the lives of all of them are similar, because although they have different jobs, the most important things are daily prayer, meditation, reading the Holy Scripture and the Eucharist.
