Owners of gardens and allotments are especially happy about the arrival of spring and sunny weather. No wonder, because a well-kept, flowery garden pleases the eye and makes spending time there very pleasant. A home garden also gives us the opportunity to grow vegetables and fruits ourselves. However, all our work may be in vain if the eternal “enemy” of gardeners – snails – gets into the flowerbeds.
Snails that are a nightmare for gardeners are mainly those without a shell, i.e. snails. They are practically omnivorous, so they pose quite a threat to our home garden. They eat grass, flowers, fruits and vegetables. They cause a lot of damage in the garden and feed mainly at night. Therefore, when we go out to the garden in the morning, right after the rain, we may be in for an unpleasant surprise.
Therefore, there is no reason to wait and it’s time to drive these uninvited guests from our flower beds, thus saving fresh cucumber and tomato seedlings. We should do it in a safe and ecological way. Although there are many chemical products on the market to get rid of snails from crops, it is best to choose a more natural solution. And it will be… beer. It will be used to make a snail trap, because the smell of yeast and alcohol attracts them.
Are snails attacking your garden? Treat them to a “trap” of beer
The first option is a jar of beer. Just insert it into the ground so that the edge of the jar is flush with the ground. Fill it to 3/4 of its volume. It is best to place the vessel near the seedlings we care about the most – because it will attract snails from a maximum of 2 meters away. The contents of the trap should be checked in the morning of the next day.
We recommend solutions that will ensure the safety of both plants, us and the animals themselves. It is possible to get rid of pests in a humane way by moving them far from our crops.
All you need are a few empty plastic drink bottles – e.g. mineral water. It is important that the plastic dish has a narrow opening and is relatively smooth and slippery. We pour some beer into the bottle and leave it like that until the next morning. For the same purpose, we can also use a beer trap made of, for example, a cardboard box, necessarily with a hole. For example, a juice carton will work well. All you need to do is pour a small amount of drink inside and leave it in the garden, lying on its side. In this way, snails attracted by the smell will crawl into the box or plastic bottle overnight. In the morning, we can take them with the trap far outside our garden and release them.
