Although Kayah’s difficult collaboration with the Bosnian composer has been legendary for decades, its effects continue to delight subsequent generations. On April 12, 1999, their joint album “Kayah i Bregović” was released on the phonographic market, which is a combination of Polish folk music with Balkan folklore. in the blink of an eye it achieved diamond status, and the songs from it, including: “Right to left”, “There is no you” and “Sleep, darling, sleep”, are still popular among listeners.
Kayah about the behind-the-scenes of creating the cover of the album she recorded with Bregović. It wasn’t carefully planned
It cannot be denied that Bregović’s album completely changed the Polish music market, becoming a huge inspiration for many other artists. Few people know, however, that not every stage of its creation was carefully planned. 25 years after the premiere, she revealed the behind-the-scenes of creating the cover. This one, although it perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the songs on the album, was a complete accident and was created in just a dozen or so minutes.
The session lasted 15 minutes, because that was all Goran could devote. Generally speaking, I don’t remember ever having a chance to stay close to him for a long time. He is constantly on the run and I have the impression that he feels extremely tired of people
– Kayah recalled in an Instagram post. It was because of this rush that she had no opportunity to prepare properly, so she appeared in front of the camera “in plain clothes” and without professional make-up.
During filming, Kayah was heavily pregnant. This was the most difficult thing for her
Kayah’s fans will certainly remember that when the album was finished, she was 9 months pregnant. Due to her advanced condition, it was difficult to choose the right style. Having little choice, she simply couldn’t fit most of the things in her wardrobe, so she was tempted to borrow someone’s oversized coat that covered all her curves. In turn, she found the bouquet of flowers in her hand by accident in the studio and decided to use it.
We sat next to each other and I started improvising. A vision of the monster immediately appeared in Jacek’s imagination, and in post-production he realized it by superimposing the images on top of each other. And the brown sepia only added artistry. And this is how the now iconic cover was created, with a pregnant woman and a guy known all over the world as Goran Bregović.
– she described the process of creating photos that today arouse no less admiration than the entire album. Finally, she encouraged fans to buy her jubilee version enriched with a live recording from one of the concerts. The post immediately flooded with admiring comments.
One of the most beautiful plates in the world
The album of my life! I have it deep in my heart. I think she’s one of the best in the world.
