Debate on abortion in the Sejm. Iwona Hartwich on the situation of families with disabled children

Iwona Hartwich decided to share her personal opinions during a several-hour debate on four draft bills on the liberalization of abortion. The MP has been raising and caring for her disabled son for three decades. She found out that her son had cerebral palsy when he was 3 months old.

Hartwich declared that she would support the possibility of safe and free termination of pregnancy. – Abortion? You’re welcome, I’m in favor. I would say to every woman in Poland who knows that she will give birth to a seriously ill child: don’t do it. This country knocked me out and it will knock you out too. It will beat so much that the bruises will not go away for the rest of your life. The biggest hypocrites are the Confederates and the MP who said nothing about help for people with disabilities, because there is no such help – said the MP in an emotional speech, thus referring to the words of Karina Bosak from Confederation, who said that her dream is that her daughter would grow up in Poland, “where she will experience support and help in difficult situations; a country where every child will be seen as a joy, because she will not be alone in overcoming all difficulties.”

Does the state support disabled people? In Poland they still have to fight

The MP from the Civic Coalition shared her reflection on the support that parents of a child with a disability can receive from the state. She emphasized that she “does not receive any help except 4,000 for a good morning.” He still has to fight for treatment, rehabilitation equipment, adaptation of apartments, a school adapted to his son’s disability, and even a pension. – Ladies and gentlemen, I had no choice, because I couldn’t have this choice. A healthy pregnancy sometimes means hypoxia and the whole package of cerebral palsy and lack of help from the state. Families like mine are eternal beggars. Beggars for everything: for school, for rehabilitation, for treatment, for 1.5 percent, for plastic caps, for dignity – she admitted.
