The spring race and the palm of primacy among streaming services in the world are temporarily winning. According to the website, it was their “Road House” with an audience of almost 14 million that beat the competition on other platforms. This title actually outclassed the competition and no production or HBO can currently compare to it. What else is the whole world watching?
Amazon Prime Video. “Road House” and nothing for a long time
“Road House” is one of those rare cases that was not harmed by the lack of theatrical release. Regardless of the director’s fury, , two months before the film’s release, announced that Amazon “hurt him by making ‘Road House’ a streaming-only release.”
The facts are this: I was supposed to make a theatrical film for MGM. Amazon bought MGM. Amazon asked me to make a great video and let’s see what happens. So I made a great movie. “Crushing hit” – these are Amazon’s words, not mine. (…) The audience wanted to see Conor McGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal on the big screen. The interest was greater than in “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”. The press was delighted. (…) What else could I have done better? As it turns out, nothing, because contrary to public statements, Amazon has no intention of supporting cinema productions – wrote Doug Liman, director, dissatisfied with the studio’s decision, in a statement for Deadline.
However, the decision was made and “Road House” immediately went exclusively to streaming. Would the title’s result be better with cinemas? There is no doubt. For now, however, Amazon and the director must be happy that they beat the competition.
What about the competition? Netflix has some suggestions
Meanwhile, the competition divided into two camps. HBO is preparing to return to Westeros – their “Road of the Dragon” will not hit the platform until June. Viewers can fill this time with re-screenings of cinema hits (according to data from FlixPatrol, the best-watched movies now are “Wonka” and the last part of “Aquaman”). Disney Plus is slowly finishing the hit “Shogun”, but the leaders are still well-known and liked productions: “Modern Family”, full-length animations for children, “Grey’s Anatomy”.
Netflix fills the gaps in competition with its productions. According to data aggregated by Variety, “The Three-Body Problem” has almost caught up with rival “Road House” in terms of the number of minutes watched. The full-length remake of “Bouncers” has already had over 1.7 billion minutes watched, while For comparison, Netflix’s full-length “Shirley”, which ranks second among films available in streaming, has accumulated less than 300 million minutes watched.
However, where Amazon has one hit, Netflix delivers several productions that easily fill the TOP 10 viewership rankings in the world. Of course, there are “The Gentlemen”, “Homicide: New York”, “Love is Blind”, “The Irish Wish” and… “The Testament. The Story of Moses”.
The world is divided on Netflix and Amazon
Netflix still reigns supreme in subscriber numbers worldwide. It is by far the most popular throughout Europe, and is also most popular in Western South America and Australia. However, Amazon is hot on Netflix’s heels here. Although the number of subscriptions for this platform is only an estimate (Amazon does not boast exactly how many people have an account with them), they indicate that the Bezos empire reigns supreme over the US and Indian markets. Disney Plus and HBO Max, which are popular in Poland, are seriously behind in this race – what’s more, they can’t even compete with Netflix, Player TVN and PolsatGo in our country.
