Gladiolus (also called gladiola) is a classic perennial known for its tall inflorescences and large, colorful, trumpet-shaped flowers. This is a cut flower belonging to the iris family, it looks spectacular in summer bouquets. Suitable for growing in flower, container and even vegetable gardens.
How to plant gladioli in the ground? Stick to these rules
- Light: Gladiolus grows and blooms best in full sun. Gladiolus bulbs will bloom in partial shade, but the colors will not be as vivid as when planted in full sun. It is worth choosing a place slightly sheltered from the wind.
- Soil for gladioli, it should have a pH of 6.5-7.0, be fertile and rich in minerals, e.g. clay-sandy. The tubers will rot if it is too heavy and wet. If you have clay soil, cultivate it in raised beds and loosen it before planting.
- Spacing: Gladiolus tubers should be placed in the garden at a distance of approx. 15-20 cm and planted at a depth of 5 to 15 cm, depending on their size (larger tubers should be planted deeper).
When to plant gladioli? It all depends on atmospheric factors
The optimal time for planting gladioli in the ground is end of April and beginning of May. However, this term should not be strictly adhered to. Everything depends on the weather. It is better to plant gladioli until the earth warms up to about 10 degrees Celsius and dries out a bit.

This is because gladioli do not like cold and waterlogged soil, as they are exposed to fungal and viral diseases and tend to rot. On the other hand, planting gladioli should not be postponed until hot weather. You can consider planting the tubers at two-week intervals to extend the flowering period of the plants.
